Baby Shower Picture

Capturing the moments of your baby shower via digital camera photos or a video is something that you should plan.  You, as either the hostess or the mom-to-be, will be busy with many things on the day of the party.  It seems easy enough to snap a few shots of the mom and the guests, but this thinking will run you into a panic during the party.  As the hostess, you'll be busy making sure your guests are greeted, introduced to others, have a beverage, and play the games among many other things.  As the mom-to-be, you'll be busy chatting with guests, opening presents, and, most importantly, YOU should be in the pictures.  So, given this, you should assign a willing person to take the pictures of your baby shower.

Who should take the pictures?
Make sure that you choose someone who is comfortable using a camera or video recorder.  If your mom is "technology challenged", just don't ask her.  Ask the chosen person weeks ahead of time.  Make sure that she can "center" people in a shot, knows how to focus the camera properly and also knows how to use the flash or understand how the lighting will affect the end result.  Maybe offer for her to use your camera and let her "play" with it days ahead of time to get used to how the camera operates.

You'll want to pick someone that is not in the immediate family since you'll want the mom-to-be's sister, mom, grandma to be in the pictures too.  If the party is co-ed, you are sure to find a willing man to take the pictures since being at a baby shower can be somewhat uncomfortable for some guys and having a task will make him feel needed and busy.

Whoever you decide to ask, be sure that she is excited about taking the pictures.  You'll see the enthusiasm through each shot and you'll get great pictures if the "photographer" is wanting to do this task.  If she would rather attend the party, back off and ask someone else.  You may want to see if your husband/boyfriend or maybe one of your co-workers would be willing to take the pictures.

Key moments to take pictures:
1.  Mom with guest as he/she arrives
2.  Mom opening gifts
3.  The cake
4.  Picture of the baby shower gifts as a grouping before the opening.
5.  The tables (if you have tables set up and decorated)
6.  The favors - take a grouping of all the favors being handed out.
7.  The room/place that the party is being held.
8.  Nice picture of the mom and the hostess.
9.  A side-shot of the mom (to show her belly off)
10.  Pictures during the games.
11.  The buffett if one is set up.  (Don't take pictures of people eating - it's really not very flattering)
12.  Family or friends picture.  Take a group picture of the mom with her college friends, hometown friends, co-workers, and family seperately.
13.  Ask the mom if there is anything else she would like pictures of from her shower.

OK, so now you know how to ask, who to ask and what to take pictures of during the baby shower.  Now, don't forget that having a video and pictures is something that the mom-to-be may want as well.  Finding someone to video the baby shower is the same as for photographing it.  Just be sure it is someone who is very willing and wants to video record the party.

For videotaping, something really neat to do is to ask each guets to look into the camera and say something to the mom-to-be or the dad-to-be or the baby or all.  Some guests may shy away and that is fine.  Not everyone likes to be photographed/taped.  And sometimes coming up with something to say "on the spot" is difficult.  To avoid this and to get some really neat "cameos" of your guests, you can mention that if they want to videotape a message, they can go into the other room whenever they can think of something to record.  That way, your guests can gather their thoughts and then record it later.  Just walking up to someone and asking for thoughts at that moment can be uncomfortable and difficult to do.

Gift for the helpers
If you do find someone who will video or photograph the baby shower, show your gratitude by giving him/her a nice gift at the end of the party.  Possibly something to do with photos like a nice picture frame or a gift card.

Finally, if you cannot, or decide to not, find someone to take pics of the party, then you can always hire a photographer to do the job.  Shop ahead of time and ask around town for a good and reasonably priced videographer or photographer.
